Nestled
between the meandering Rhine and the wooded Vosges mountains
Alsace is a land of delightful old villages amidst a carpet
of vines. Though seperated from the rest of France by the
Vosges mountains, Alsace is proudly French but does have a
strong Germanic influence.
France with a strong Germanic influence
Alsace
boasts beautiful unspoilt villages with winding cobbled streets
lined with half-timbered houses, their balconies festooned
with bright geraniums. As you travel through the region, look
out for one of the emblems of Alsace - the stork's nest atop
a chimney stack or steeple.
The beautiful city of Strasbourg is
not only the capital of Alsace but is now proclaimed the capital
of Europe and symbolises the style and charm of the Western
Rhine.
Alsace
is appealing at any time of the year. Springtime brings the
warming sun, fields of daffodils and gushing mountain streams
as the snow melts on the mountain tops.
In the summer, the weather is hot
and sunny, ideal for strolling around charming villages or
cooling off in a mountain lake.
Autumn and the grape harvest is a
time of high activity with the colourful trees at their glorious
best as the leaves change.
Winter brings the snow to the mountains
with some downhill as well as simple cross-country skiing
available whilst the plain remains sheltered making this a
good time to enjoy a holiday combining activity and culture.
